I organized Tertium Quid Press in 2007. I had always been intrigued by small independent presses since my early college days studying alternative literary genres and the socio-political issues of journalism. When I published my first books with mainstream presses I understood how musicians and songwriters felt about their remuneration. For example, I co-wrote Learning Circles over 18 months, and the four of us were offered the “fair rate” of 9% of the retail price split between the four of us. I created Tertium Quid without pecuniary interest other than to cover expenses if possible and to “return” the profits to the public through inexpensive retail pricing, providing free copies to all students and teachers, and really to anyone who asked; and if there were profits they would go to kids’ peace-making projects. I chose Tertium Quid Press in honor of Jean Piaget as the “third way” in epistemology, relational, constructivist holism, along with the traditions of innatism and empiricism.

Other than control of my work as much as possible, the other reason I created this imprinteur was that so many of my students were professional K-12 teachers, creative, competent, dedicated and yet often were afraid “to write.” “I’m just a kindergarten teacher,” or “I have nothing to say.” Building on what my old friend the novelist Pat Conroy told me, the teacher who wanted to write, “Honor what you know, your experience and passion. Others can write about you and your accomplishments, but only you can write about who you are.” So I wanted to create a number of genres, of texts that had legitimacy, that could be recognized as a former kindergarten teacher who had something to say.

A special thanks to my Tertium Quid collaborators and artisans, Dominic Fucci & Travis Erickson who have both supported and taught me much.
